Process and Move Forward from Your Trauma in Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17603

Millions of people walk around every day carrying the anchor of a trauma. Sometimes the trauma was from a long-term event, like a war, or a short-term event, like a sexual trauma or a violent crime.

That trauma impacts every moment of their lives. Many people seem to move through life without it affecting them, but often, they’re haunted in private.

  • Combat-related PTSD

  • Sexual assault

  • Domestic violence

  • Child abuse

  • Victim of crime

  • Church-related sexual abuse

  • Other traumas

The best way to move forward in your life is to process the events using your entire brain.

EMDR and Trauma Recovery

“Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro starting in 1988 in which the person being treated is asked to recall distressing images; the therapist then directs the patient in one type of bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or hand tapping.” - Wikipedia

In EMDR, we’ll often use a light bar, headphones, or clickers in each hand. This helps to open both sides of the brain, left and right.

The left side of your brain processes rational thought. This is that part that’s often looking for a justification for what happened, how you should be able to handle it, and how you can “get over it.”

The right side is the emotional side. This is the side that re-experiences the trauma every time it shows up, often started by a rational thought on the other side. When the right side of the brain is engaged, you’ll feel like you did at the time of the event.

These two sides of your brain are often in conflict. The rational side looks for the simple answer that will make it all go away. The right side is scarred and scared. It’s still there.

The problem is that the memories are unprocessed. The way to process a memory is to let both sides of your brain work through it together.

That’s what EMDR does. Because we use bilateral stimulation, it will automatically engage both sides of your brain. Then, when we bring up a traumatic memory, both sides are dealing with it at the same time.

The Power of EMDR

EMDR differs from other therapies in that it works quickly, efficiently, and helps transform cognitions to feel more positive about ourselves.

By working with both sides of the brain at the same time, we’re able to address traumatic memories. When the memory arises, we address it while your brain is open to change.

The name, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is actually a great explanation of the order in which we do things.

Eye movement - Or sound or hands, but we use an alternating stimulation to get both sides of your brain engaged.

Desensitization - We take away the power of the memory. This is done by combining the power of your rational thought with your emotional ability to heal. (Yes, you have that. We’ll show you!) This will make the memory less of a trauma and more of a distant memory of something that happened.

Reprocessing - As we said earlier, trauma is caused by memories that haven’t been processed completely. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is those unprocessed memories attacking your everyday life.

The last step is to reprocess those memories into something more pleasant, more manageable.

This is where a victim becomes a survivor.

We teach your brain to see the memory differently and often, we can even derive power from it.
