“The challenge of recovery is to reestablish ownership of your body and your mind-of your self. This means feeling free to know what you know and to feel what you feel… “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel Van Der Kolk

MEET GWEN:

Gwen Burns (they/them) is a Licensed Social Worker who brings warmth, empathy, and genuine care to their therapeutic work. A graduate of Shippensburg University with a Master’s in Social Work, Gwen is passionate about helping individuals and families heal, grow, and reconnect with their strengths. Above all, Gwen honors the uniqueness of each person’s story and walks alongside their clients as they reconnect with their own inner strength and sense of self.

Gwen is trained in EMDR Trauma Therapy  (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and regularly integrates EMDR techniques to help clients process overwhelming or traumatic experiences. Gwen is also trained in Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) through Parts 1, 2, and Advanced training with Dr. Suzanne Levy, using ABFT to support families in moving from disconnection and conflict toward deeper emotional connection, understanding, and support.

  • Gwen works with clients navigating a wide range of relational dynamics, including co-parenting relationships, family systems, and alternative relationship structures such as polyamory and ethical non-monogamy (ENM). They are dedicated to working systemically with families and partners, supporting them in building communication, mutual respect, and emotional safety. Whether working with individuals or multiple members of a relationship system, Gwen fosters a collaborative environment where everyone’s voice can be heard and valued.

Gwen spent three years as a mental health professional at the Center for Hope and Healing, a Trauma, Wellness, and Training Center in Camp Hill, PA. They also completed their graduate internship at Sun Point Wellness Center, where they continue to bring a client-centered, strengths-based approach to their work.

As a therapist who is part of the LGBTQ+ communities, Gwen is especially passionate about creating an inclusive, affirming environment where all clients feel safe and supported. They work with individuals navigating gender identity, sexuality, self-esteem, trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship concerns, and are honored to support clients through their gender-affirming healthcare journeys.

Gwen draws from narrative therapy, mindfulness practices, and a holistic understanding of healing to help clients reconnect with their inner wisdom and sense of agency. They support clients in identifying and challenging internalized stories that may be rooted in trauma, shame, or societal expectations, gently guiding them toward more empowering and compassionate narratives.

Through mindfulness, Gwen helps clients become more attuned to their emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations, fostering greater self-awareness and emotional regulation. They also incorporate body-based wisdom, recognizing the powerful role that movement and grounding—through nature, gardening, art, dancing, and exercise—can play in releasing tension, processing emotions, and building a more embodied sense of safety. Their approach emphasizes healing as a layered and dynamic process, where clients are supported in honoring their past while creating meaningful, values-driven lives in the present.

Gwen enjoys both indoor and outdoor gardening and finds time in nature to be a powerful grounding practice. They believe plants offer meaningful lessons that can be applied to personal growth and healing. Gwen also values movement—through exercise and dancing—as an essential part of their own mental and physical wellness journey.
