MADELINE SCHAEFER

When we imagine that we “know” someone, we have closed off the space to continue to be curious about that person’s infinite depths”

~ Barbara Stevens Sullivan, The Mystery of Analytical Work: Weavings from Jung and Bion

MEET MADELINE:

When you meet Madeline, you’ll feel her openness and eagerness to explore and learn about your  experiences. Her clinical interventions usually start by asking the client deepening questions and as the relationship develops she will offer reflections on patterns and themes emerging during sessions. At a later stage, she can also reflect on how the therapeutic relationship represents and mirrors the challenges faced in their daily lives. Through sharing her own experience she hopes to build trust and potentially forge new patterns and behaviors for being in a relationship with the self and others.

Madeline enters the therapy room with authenticity, and has an insightful and compassionate approach to all the individuals, couples and families entering her office.  She takes a thoughtful approach to treatment planning with her clients and she works with adults of ages 18-80+.  Madeline’s areas of expertise include relationship challenges, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, personality and mood disorders, disordered eating, and women’s mental health.

  •      Even though she feels like she was born to be a therapist, it took Madeline some time to come to terms with that aspect of herself. After years of being on her journey of healing and exploring who she was (or rather, who she was not), she was ready to step into her role as a therapist. Madeline worked as a Family Based Therapist at Pennsylvania Counseling Services. She has also completed the EMDRIA approved EMDR trauma therapy training through the Center for Creative Mindfulness. This advanced training has served as an invaluable tool in helping her clients unpack and heal from their traumatic experiences.

When asked about which career accomplishment she is the proudest, Madeline shares that whenever she sees her clients make new, brave choices based on the support they receive in therapy she is overjoyed. Madeline has a sincere approach and passion for every client that crosses her path.

‘The Mystery of Analytical Work: Weavings from Jung and Bion’ by Barbara Stevens Sullivan is a book that has greatly impacted Madeline. She read this book during her first year of masters level one training and it completely changed how she positions herself as a therapist. It taught her the value of relatedness as a therapeutic tool and the importance of being authentic as a clinician and a person.

When stepping outside of the role as a therapist, Madeline engages in her first and longest hobby, reading. For her, it has always been both an escape and a safe haven. She enjoys being outside, whether it’s in her garden or going on local hikes. Madeline also plays guitar, but usually within the comfort of her living room.
