MEET TATUM:
Tatum Young is a MCT and currently a second-year master’s student in the Applied Clinical Psychology program at Penn State Harrisburg. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Bucknell University, located in Lewisburg, PA. As a clinician, she would describe herself as warm, genuine, supportive, and collaborative.
Tatum was inspired by several experiences she has had throughout her academic career. However, the course that impacted her the most was a culture and child development course taught by Chris Boyatzis. The overall message of the course being that “culture determines normal” has stuck with Tatum, and she is determined to incorporate that into her clinical work.
Her decision to become a therapist stems from her genuine passion for helping others better understand themselves. She strives to create a safe, warm, and supportive environment where clients can openly explore their thoughts, feelings, and emotions on a deeper level. She believes that therapy is a collaborative process, and is committed to working alongside clients on their journey as they work towards meaningful growth. She recognizes and validates that therapy can be intimidating, but her ultimate goal is to ensure that the process is as comfortable and natural as possible.

Tatum is interested in using evidence-based therapeutic models such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, strengths-based therapy, family systems therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy. However, she hopes as she gains more experience that other modalities will be added to this list. Some of the areas she is particularly interested in working with include anxiety, depression, adjustment to life transitions/changes, stress, women’s mental health, identity development, self-esteem, child therapy, family therapy, and couples therapy.
Outside of counseling, Tatum enjoys staying active through playing pickleball with friends or taking a scenic walk. She appreciates having time to stay active, while also spending time outside and with people around her. She also enjoys unwinding by working on Sudoku or word puzzles. The challenge of problem-solving gives her an opportunity to slow down and engage in something both relaxing and mentally stimulating.
