Struggling with Depression in Lancaster? EMDR Therapy Can Help, and so can DBT Counseling!

EMDR is a form of trauma therapy that is scientifically proven to help reduce depressive episodes and instill resiliency.  Our team has extensive experience working with individuals with both single incident, along with complex PTSD issues.

Sun Point’s Lancaster, Pennsylvania counseling team is based out of the 8 N. Queen Street downtown Griest building - in the heart of Lancaster County. We are so proud to offer cutting edge trauma informed tools to everyone in Lancaster who is looking to address their depressive episodes.

How EMDR Works

Our team uses the most up to date protocols, as originally developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro to help address all aspects of trauma (negative schemas, images, feelings, body sensations, etc).  Your Lancaster Primary Therapist at Sun Point will provide psycho-education on the different modalities that exist.  You may use a light bar to help you process trauma, or small handheld tappers, along with watching a hand move back and forth, or even audio.  The options are countless as each counselor tailors their approach to processing trauma based on their client’s needs.

How DBT Therapy Works

Our Primary Therapist team integrates dialectic behavioral therapy into the work with trauma-informed clients. DBT has countless skills-based interventions and coping skills.  These can be worked on with your Lancaster therapist in order to learn how to feel grounded and calm when life may be overwhelming.  These skills are particularly helpful when suicidal ideation, helplessness or worthlessness is present in your life.

What Happens if Depression is Left Untreated?

Before answering this question - we want to emphasize that early intervention is the best course of treatment to help people live adaptive lives.  Left treatment, trauma can cause a variety of depressive disorders, anxiety, substance use, unemployment, and other maladaptive life tendencies.  Depression can stem from what EMDR causes ‘schemas’ that were adopted after a trauma occurs, ex: ‘I am not safe’, ‘I cannot trust’, ‘I am not good enough’, and ‘I don’t deserve good things’. Within the first few sessions of a client stepping into our Lancaster counseling office, or virtual therapy session we begin to map these out to better understand how depression and trauma may be impeding our client’s lives.

What is the average age of a Lancaster Client?

Many clients come to us asking - can this help at a young age, an elderly age, or a teenage age.  And the answer is an overwhelming yes, yes yes - we work with people from Lancaster who are ages 3-93+.  The heart of our work is to allow our clients to realize that they can overcome their depressive symptoms.

What is the difference between single incident and complex trauma?

Some people start counseling at our Lancaster office mentioning just one event that they hope to work on.  This could be a difficult pregnancy, a car crash, an assault, or a burglary.  Essentially these single incident traumas have a start and stop point and generally speaking take place for about less than a day.  When a multiple prolonged traumas occur, this warrants a complex trauma treatment plan.  Complex trauma is treatable with a variety of therapeutic interventions.  Examples of complex trauma include: prolonged childhood abuse, working through a relationship that had domestic violence, or

Our Bottom Line: Our Lancaster Talk Therapy Team is dedicated to helping people thrive in their lives. We work with people throughout Lancaster county, along with virtually throughout the state of Pennsylvania providing counseling that is clinically proven to work. We are active treatment planners, making sure we maximize the use of every one of your therapy sessions.  Whether we use DBT or EMDR or a combination of both; we have specifically tailored our plan to help you meet your counseling goals.
